This is a must-have volume for a collection in behavioral economics. This reviewer is not usually a fan of volumes that are mainly collections of previously published work, but John Tomer has done a terrific job as editor of this volume and the author has substantially revised earlier published essays. The title indicates that this book is about "nudging" (see the author's previous work with Richard H. Thaler) in the context of the framework of System 1 and System 2, known to many from the popular work by Daniel Kahneman (about his work with Amos Tversky). System 1 is the "fast" system of the brain that allows for the instantaneous reactions that keep us from getting hit in the face with baseballs, for example. System 2 is the "slow," more deliberate brain processes where education would take place. In summary, this slim volume discusses nudges directed at System 1 and those directed at System 2, and considers the efficacy and desirability of each. If this is an exemplar of the series from Palgrave, this reviewer would subscribe without hesitating.Summing Up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. |
